Meet Alexandra
Believes in Oakland schools. Committed to our students.
Her Story
Who is Alexandra?
Alexandra grew up on Chicago's West Side, experiencing both public and private education before attending an HBCU (Historically Black College/University). She describes her journey as one involving “duality: facing challenges, while achieving milestones.”
Alexandra maintained a 3.5 GPA for her first three years of high school. Her senior year, she worked 80+ hours weekly at White Castle to support her family, failed 6 classes that year, but passed the one required for graduation. Though her educational trajectory was nearly derailed, she remained committed.
She attended college with her grandmother's financial assistance, she didn't qualify for a Pell Grant due to her GPA.
“Kids who look like me don't always get second chances, and I feel blessed that I was still able to attend college, thanks to a praying grandmother.”

Roots
Childhood & Foundation
Growing up, family and community have always been my foundation. As a young child, I was full of curiosity, joy, and big questions.
Alexandra attended Edward Waters University, the same HBCU her parents attended. There she joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., danced in the Triple Threat Marching Band, and served as president of the National Society of Black Engineers. She completed two years of AmeriCorps service at Drop Back In Academy and worked with Bridge of Northeast Florida and Communities in Schools.
“Following in my parents' footsteps...was transformative. I felt the weight and pride of legacy. It gave me a deep sense of history, community, and the confidence to own my path.”
Her Calling
Teaching Philosophy & Commitment
“In my work as an educator, I strive to ensure every student, whether they fit the norm or not, is truly seen, learning, and reaching their full potential. That student who moves around. That student who tests gifted but gets overlooked. That student who just needs one teacher to believe in them. I see them. I was them.”
Alexandra has worked at public, private, and charter schools. She joined AIMS Academy as a math teacher in September 2024.
“During my first year of my PhD, I worked as a substitute teacher...I learned that they had an opening in their math department that they could not fill. The students asked if I would come and be their math teacher. I joined AIMS because when I see a problem, I have a tough time looking away.”

A Personal Note
A Letter from My Mommy
My Daughter Alexandra
My best Christmas ever was the day my daughter Alexandra was born...After twelve hours of labor, when she finally made her entrance into the world, the nurse lifted her up high and sang, ‘It's Alex, It's Alex!’
As a child, Alexandra was a peaceful sleeper who rarely cried. She had strong spatial awareness, she could recall routes correctly at age 3. She had a deep concern for others' welfare, made friends easily, and often brought neighborhood children home, revealing that they had unmet needs: food, clothing, school supplies.
The thing I love most about Alexandra is her natural ability to be a responsible leader.
At age 16, while our family faced financial hardship, Alexandra obtained a job at a fast-food chain, was quickly promoted to assistant manager, encouraged her younger sister and cousin to work there, and managed the employment of neighborhood youth.
Initially, Alexandra declined her college plans to work full-time. I drove her to Edward Waters University myself. Despite her low GPA, she attended a summer school program. She graduated with honors four years later.
If her father was alive, I know he would be so proud of all her accomplishments and the amazing person she is today.
